Futuristic Desk Lamp

For this project I am going to make an articulating lamp with a futuristic aesthetic. I plan on doing this by 3D printing all of the lamps pieces out of black and white material and painting over them with a gloss to give them a shine. I think this will help with the aesthetic of futuristic being all white or black and shiny. The following picture is similar to what I want to do, but I want to make the lamp appear more sleet with slightly more contrast than the one shown here.

Figure 1

I will make the lamp out of 4 different sections, the first three sections will all be the same and able to rotate in one direction in order to be able to raise and lower the overall height of the lamp. The section containing the lights will be a bar that has a ball joint on the end that will allow it to swivel in all directions allowing me to get any light angle that I could want.

Figure 2

I will be using LED strip lights that I can code to be any color that I want as well and making the lights do any type of pattern such as pulsing in one color or various colors.

Hey Ryan, your project sounds very interesting. I have something similar to the lamp design you are proposing on my desk. I think your plan for 3D printing all the parts will work out well, but I was wondering what kind of finish you were aiming for on the final product. I have experimented with painting 3D printed parts before, and I have found that the texture from the 3D printing can still remain. While this is an interesting look, if you wanted it to be smooth, I would recommend using a high build primer to cover the texture before you paint. I am excited to see how this project comes out!

Your design is coming along very well and I can’t wait to see were it takes you. By doing a futuristic lamp I really think you can take this in a lot of different ways. I wonder if you’re choosing to stick to black and white is a personal choice and how you ended up there. I was also wondering if you where thinking of adding any cut outs into the lamp pieces. By doing this you may be able to further the futuristic design of your lamp.
