Cybernetic Punk, My Up-cycling Aesthetic

My up-cycling project aesthetic will be Cybernetic Punk. It focuses on a hectic state of being terminally online, with motifs such as chaotic wires and cables, old computers, and confusing symbols and jargon. I choose this aesthetic for 2 main reasons. One is that I have a host of old circuit boards, wires, and electronic components at my disposal. The other is that I find this aesthetics commentary on how harsh poorly designed digital and physical interfaces can be with our ever increasingly frequent use of modern technology. My up-cycling object will be a soldering iron table made of a combination of aluminum cans, old electronics and cardboard. I think this will be the ideal object to fabricate in the Cybernetic Punk aesthetic because the workspace itself is also bound to be haphazardly covered in various electronics during use.

  • This is defiantly a great aesthetic choice for an Upcycle project. Im already thinking of really imaginative and creative ways you can accomplish this. Im excited to see what type of up cycled materials you use and how you portray the chaos when it is complete!

thanks, I’m looking mostly to use aluminum cans, old electronics and cardboard, but I’m excited to see if I can squeeze anything else in there.

  • I like the mix of unused electronics for the aesthetic purpose in combination with a soldering station. Can you clarify the difference between cybernetic punk and cyberpunk as you see it?

Certainly, As I see it, Cyberpunk is a more recent aesthetic largely tied with the game Cyberpunk 2077. It often features bright neon colors on sleek black designs with very high energy digital interfaces. The Cyberpunk aesthetic has a more modern and somewhat optimistic take on our constant integration with technology. On the other hand, Cybernetic Punk tends to focus more on hectic and poorly designed interfaces in very bland or practical colors and has a more pessimistic take on the dangers of our constant involvement with technology.
