Designer I Admire: Cody Borst

Cody Borst is not a very well-known name outside of the immersive entertainment industry (think escape rooms, Meow Wolf, etc.). However, he has been incredibly involved in the designing and building of many escape rooms in the Denver area, as well as Meow Wolf Denver.

I currently work as an engineer at Rabbit Hole Recreation Services, an escape room location that Cody had worked at. When I say he worked there, I mean he built all of the escape rooms from scratch pretty much by himself. Below is a picture of one of the sets for the rooms found on https://www.uncovercolorado.com/activities/rabbit-hole-recreation-services-escape-rooms/:

Cody has won several awards for his escape rooms, as well as other products he has made such as kids toys. During his career, he has also worked with large companies such as Google and Facebook, where he helped develop virtual reality standards and practices for the technology.

  • I would love to know what Cody Borst’s thought process is when approaching a design for an escape room! I wonder if he determines the mechanisms or the theme first, aka whether form follows function or vice-versa. I also really appreciate the aesthetic he created in this particular escape room. It draws upon familiar Mesoamerican themes, but remains distinctly unique and almost futuristic through the incorporation of lights and the pedestal in the center.

His type of design is very interesting regarding how he incorporates mechanisms that are used in escape rooms into his style. I would think that he has spent a lot of time brainstorming creative idea to do this with.

The picture example you use is awesome! It seems really detailed and immersive, what parts did Borst focus on in Meow Wolf? I have been there a couple times and I would to be able to identify his work.
