For my upcycle project I am making a chalk bag for climbing in the earthy neutrals aesthetic using upcycled fabric. My chalk bag will feature an unconventional magnetic closure. The chalk bag is made in an earthy color palette including light tan, green, and blue. I really like these colors and the earthy neutral aesthetic, and most of my clothes and house decor fall into this aesthetic. I also thought this aesthetic would tie in well with climbing in general, and how it makes me feel connected to nature.

I think the opposite of the earthy neutrals aesthetic would be the y2k neon futurism aesthetic. This aesthetic is very detached from nature and neutral colors. It often features neon colors and black, which are not typically associated with nature. I associate this aesthetic with the neon colors of pink, orange, green, yellow, and blue.

The futurism aspect of this aesthetic lends itself to sharp harsh lines and inorganic shapes that would not be seen in nature. This directly contradicts the freeform organic shapes of nature. They lack symmetry, harsh lines, and exact angles. I am channeling this freeform organic shape for my earthy neutrals chalk bag. I am not expecting my sewing job to be perfectly symmetrical or straight, so it will likely take on an organic shape.

If I were to make my chalk bag in this opposite aesthetic, I would expect it to have sharp edges and bright colors. This made me think of those geometric shape bags that were popular a few years back.

I have sketched out what I think my chalk bag would end up looking like in this aesthetic.

It has been interesting to think about the opposite aesthetic, and it has made me further understand my chosen aesthetic of earthy neutrals. I am surprised that I actually do really like both of these aesthetics despite them being complete opposites.
Interestingly enough, I think the magnetic closure component of the bag more closely aligns with the y2k futurism aesthetic than the earthy neutral aesthetic. For the magnetic closure at the top, I will be using black fabric. I understand that black doesn’t match the aesthetic, but the type of fabric I wanted to use seemed to only be available in black. The rectangular magnets I will be using have sharp harsh lines. They will not be exposed in the final design as they will be encased in the fabric, but their shape will still be visible.
I have begun fabricating my chalk bag, and I have acquired all upcycled materials except for the magnets. I have had trouble finding magnets, so I may need to buy them new at this point.

Hell yes to your chalk bag. Magnetic closures are the best. Your decision to base the opposite aesthetic on colors was wise I completely agree. And honestly I think I like both bags. Although neon would be easier to keep track of outdoors.
Hi Jax,
I agree that my aesthetic is mainly based on a color palette, so it made sense to center the opposite around colors as well! I agree the neon could be useful 🙂
