Final Project – Mad Max RC Car

For my final project, I selected the Mad Max (post apocalyptic) aesthetic. I decided to modify an RC car’s aesthetic elements by removing its body panels and creating an exoskeleton or shell that’s on brand for Mad Max. I chose a modern Ford Mustang as the car to model off of.

To create the design I downloaded blueprints from the internet and created a 3D mesh in 3DX Catia. This took dozens of hours to form (on top of what it took for me to learn how to use Catia). I then ported the model to SolidWorks as a watertight STL file. Next, I hollowed out the car, added a supercharger to the hood and created mounting holes. This required me to reverse-engineer the original RC car to get the model to fit.

I 3D Printed the design at 1/16th scale in the Idea Forge and spent almost a whole day removing support structure and modifying the chassis so that the Mustang shell would fit. Ultimately, I was able to mount the front with two screws, and the rear with two screws. I added spikes to the roof to really sell the Mad Max vibe.

The final design featured metallic surfaces, working lights and suspension, and goes up to 33 kph or 20 mph!
