OVERVIEW:
The goal was to make a simple, yet durable bike rack for mounting equipment. I planned for the design to utilize raw materials, and have simple curved geometries.
The referenced aesthetic: Minimalism
Reduction of elements: Use only using aluminum.
Simple: The design is minimal with very little components to assemble (total of 3 components). In addition, The design will be adaptable.
Functional: A rack that can be used to transport camping equipment and additional gear.
Using SolidWorks, I designed a simple and rapid solution for mounting camping gear onto my bike. I intentionally selected aluminum for all primary components to maintain a clean, cohesive aesthetic. I also incorporated curved geometry and industrial-style slot patterns to balance visual appeal with functional adjustability.
To validate the design, I first produced 3D-printed prototypes to assess scale and functionality. After iterating, I fabricated the final plates and mounting clamps using waterjet cutting. I completed the assembly by sanding the aluminum surfaces to achieve a brushed finish and adding tapped holes to accommodate fasteners.
If I were to redesign the mounts, I would add bent edges to the stanchion mounts. In addition, I would elongate some of the slots to allow for more mounting flexibility.
