Why Carbon Fiber Short Board and What’s next?

I originally wanted to explore the construction of carbon fiber spoilers and splitters on race cars. I thought a fun way to do this would be to build a skateboard using a similar construction method. This project served to practice my carbon fiber fabrication skills, which I’ll definitley be using more in the future.

After completing this project, I realized I learned a lot from all of the small mistakes I made along the way. I’ve been thinking of ways to streamline the whole production process so that I could even make several carbon decks in one layup. With all this in mind, I decided that once school was over, I’d start the process of making another carbon fiber skateboard. This one would be more durable and provide a better ride. I could even try to make several decks and sell them if I had enough interest.

I’m very happy with how my project turned out and hope I can take this concept further. I’d love to hear suggestions or interest from people about a carbon fiber longboard.

I’d be interested to see how a longboard turns out- I imagine you’d need an even stronger core to build the board around though- maybe aluminum?

Also, just curious- what other types of things might you be making out of carbon fiber?

It was great to actually feel this board during class and see the criss cross pattern you did with the carbon. It turned out great and looks very professional! How do you think you could make it more durable so the carbon doesn’t further crack? I was thinking maybe if you added another layer of crossed carbon on the bottom or just had more crossing it could be stronger. Overall awesome job and I would totally buy this if I knew how to skateboard….perhaps you could teach me 🙂
