I have not completely decided on my project yet, but I am thinking about making a model sailboat, with a dynamic aspect of working, moving parts: a swinging rudder, working running rigging, etc. This is something that really reminds me of home: my family lives on the water in Maryland, sailing is a big part of our life, and I have always wanted a reminder of that life here in CU. I anticipate the hardest part of this project being the woodworking: the carving of a very unusual, asymmetric shape. I have actually tried to make a model boat many times before, but now I believe I have the skills, resources, and motivation to actually make it happen!

I really like the inspiration behind the project, it is always great to work on something you are interested in. I think the end product could be something really cool that you could display in your house if you wanted to. Are there any specific boat designs you are looking to model yours after? Good luck with the build, hopefully it ends up looking great!
I think I want do an offshore racer, specifically an IMOCA 60 (the Vendee Globe boats). They are basically huge sleds, they have such flat hull shapes. I really want to model them, though, to showcase their canting keels and foils, which I will try to get to move.
Very interesting project! I like how it combines your hobby of sailing with engineering and art. How large do you want to make it? I think small models can be more difficult to woodwork dynamic parts, and with the Makerspace shop equipment a larger model (than the one pictured) may be easier. I’m not referring to huge per say, but somewhere in the two feet or foot and a half length scale. It may be more impressive for the presentation too! I’m looking forward to seeing this!
