This is great! The aesthetic turned out really great! It’s impressive that you did the carving yourself and it looks really good! Great job!

  • I think the size of the box is perfect. Weight of it will help keep it from sliding around and lid is a nice weight as well. The carved graphics add a really nice tactile feel to it and humans naturally like to touch edges.

What if you use a finger hole for the secret door handle instead of the hook? It would allow for more space inside and less parts!

    Nice Job!

I like the black color of the box. The matte color gives a nice simplistic finish to it. I really like the carvings on the box particularly the dot painting. Good job with the secret compartment too. I’m a bit put off by the hook on your secret compartment lid which makes it not so secret. I’d suggest having a notch in the bottom or something to make it not so obvious. Overall, great job.

  • Great project choice to learn more about woodworking and acquire a new skill set! So glad you payed tribute to Patrick and his secret box. The Japanese aesthetic is very unique and gives the box character. The secret compartment is a cool feature. I really like the woodcarvings you created and painting them adds a really nice aesthetic appeal.

This is a neat project. Your aesthetic really pops out in the design. The secret component is a really cool touch but it feels hard to pull and push back in (might be intentional?). Otherwise it’s a really neat gift for a loved one. The woodworking shop in ITLL can also be helpful with precision tools for woodworking.

  • Your box is really beautiful! The black makes it look mysterious and luxurious, and the secret compartment further lends to the mystery. Japanese furniture and art is very beautiful, and I’m glad you stuck with this aesthetic. Even though you claim not to be an artist, the tree, water lily, and japanese symbol are really beautiful! I completely agree with your complaint about using a hand saw to cut wood, and I do think it led to the misalignment on the sides. A bit of sanding and a little more cutting could definitely fix this. Regardless, good job and I hope your mom likes it!!

  • The box looks great! It does look like a simple organic design, I like that it is heavy make its feel safe and secure. Oh, man using a hand saw is brutal! Should have used the rip saw in the ITLL! The painting is really impressive also! Waiting for something to dry is a pain, I get so impatient waiting for something to dry.

The whole point of the final project is to study and implement an aesthetic and I feel you fully embraced the concept. You have clearly done your research and studied the Japanese aesthetic in detail. I really appreciate the craftsmanship and the painting because I am less than proficient at it. I like the sentiment of the project and the simple influences of your design.

  • Once you get the lid fixed (I’d suggest going with two hinges both to make it more stable and to avoid the wood glue joint) this will be awesome. I really like the look and feel of it already, the carving and paint especially. You sure you don’t want anything on the front? Even something like a few lines or curves would be really nice.

    • Oh, also, if you remove the hook and go with a hole, you can have a flat bottom so that jewelry or other objects aren’t in danger of getting caught.

I really like the secret compartment! The carvings came out so well and remind me of lino block prints. I also prefer the matte black paint versus a stain. The paint really gave it that lacquered finish that you explored in the Design Review. I totally get what you mean when you said you like holding it; the box has a very calming effect, and the carving satisfy my tactile needs. 🙂

I love it! The high gloss lacquer makes the piece seem classy and the Japanese aesthetic works well. Huge plus for doing the carvings yourself and improving your art skills in the process.
One thing, I suggest adding a front clasp to the box. It would make the box more secure, aesthetically pleasing, and address the issue with the top not securing entirely.
    Great work!
