Upcycle Inspiration: Pennies

As the years drag on, the value of a penny has increasingly gone down as natural inflation decreases the value of a note. In the 1950’s a penny had value and was commonly used in transactions. Today however, if given three cents back in change, many people will not take it or just donate it to the tip jar. People nowadays do not view the penny as it once was and therefore I wanted to try and show the value pennies have, albeit through an artistic lens. Their copper material can provide for a pretty aesthetic as their color can shine brightly when new, or turn green and create an entirely new aesthetic when oxidation occurs. Yes, monetary wise, the penny’s value no longer is as important as it once was, and there have even been calls to end the creation of this coin in the US mints but my aim is to show that the penny can still bring joy to people and still holds its own value

Hi Shalil! It’s interesting that you will be making something that gives a penny more value than it once had in a sense. It’s not entirely clear what it is you’ll be making, but the inspiration for your project is clearly unique and I’m interested to see your finished product!

  • This project sounds really cool and I love the idea of using pennies for something that is actually useful. I would love to see a progress picture of some sort on this to see where you’re at! Can’t wait to see the final product.

Also if you dislike pennies you should listen to the first 10 minutes of this podcast. It’s super interesting. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-anthropocene-reviewed/id1342003491?mt=2&i=1000422557984
