Skill Sets and Aspirations

I am in my fifth and final year here at the University of Colorado at Boulder and I’m currently in the process of obtaining my Master’s of Applied Sciences degree in mechanical engineering. I have just completed the credit hours for my Bachelor’s and I also completed those required for my engineering entrepreneurship certificate. During my time at the University, I have been put on many group projects in which I have learned to machine, weld, use 3D printers, laser cut, and most importantly, learned to work alongside my colleagues. I have an associate’s certificate in CAD and can design parts with sketches proficiently. I have also worked as a test engineer and have grown accustomed to writing test reports and final project reports. I was the project manager of my senior design project and gained some viable experience from it including technical writing, organization using Gantt and RACI charts, designing for manufacturability, fabrication, setting up test procedures and protocols, preforming tests and documenting the results, analyzing test results and documenting the findings, and presenting of projects. Additionally, I have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as a result of past sales experience. A few summers ago, I worked as a continuous improvement intern, getting familiar with industrial practices and improving productivity of production processes. I would often process engineering change orders and would also write up guidelines for manufacturing processes for assembly lines. Besides engineering skills, I have acquired considerable experience with excel, powerpoint, word, and some coding programs. I am proficient in coding in VBA, LabView, and Matlab.

I have a deep interest in innovation, and therefore really enjoy prototyping, modeling, fabricating, and testing. I aspire to make my own company one day where I produce medical equipment or any sort of product related to biomechanical engineering! For now, my goal is to work in the medical engineering industry and gain viable experience. I then would like to try and come up with new and improved designs for medical equipment or any other side project I see as having potential to get a patent. Hopefully, one of these products will be enough to build accompany around!

I love how you mentioned that you have skills working with people. I feel like too many people don’t recognize that as a necessary skill! Also I love your aspirations! I am also trying to get into the medical engineering field. I can’t wait to see what your final project is, especially with how many skills you have!

  • Hey Yazen, I am also in the BS/MS track and planning to graduate after this semester. Glad to see other people have similar interests! That is awesome that you have experience 3D printing and laser cutting. I might get your help on some ideas I have for my final project that might utilize 3D printing or laser cutting. Those are some awesome aspirations, especially starting your own company! Maybe you could hire me! Good luck on your final project!
