Main Project Aspirations – Wood Art

For my Main Project, I knew that I wanted to work with quality wood to make a timely piece for display. The main question I found asking myself, is what do I want to do with wood and what will be possible and or within my “scope” of being achievable. Another question was for whom do I want to make this project for. Like my upcycling project, which was dedicated and made as a gift for my mom, I also want my main project to act as a gift. The options that I kept throwing around in my head, was my little brother, my father, and or my good friend who leaves for pilot training June 2nd. I still need to narrow down whom I want to dedicate this project too, and once I do that, it will direct exactly what I will fabricate.

However, the general theme that I want to achieve with my project, is some type of wood wall art. After doing some research on DIY wood art projects, I saw multiple ideas and concepts that were very appealing to me! Below are some pictures of some projects that were eye catching that I may want to emulate and adapt for my main project.

From my research into wood art, I was really interested in the wood burning technique and the amazing features and projects that result from it. Therefore, I am leaning towards a combination of wood burning to add permanent images onto the wood, with wood carvings and or cut-outs. I think with the combination of the two, I can create a beautiful wall piece. With these two aspects, I also want to incorporate a light system, similar to that shown in the image above, that responds to music possibly and changes color depending on the music being played. I am sure there are simple light strips with built in programs and a Bluetooth system that accomplish this, but I do need to do more research into this aspect to see if it is feasible.

This type of aesthetic is very appealing and I appreciate the pictures that you included to show the type of direction you’re going in terms of your project. Do you plan on buying a specific type of wood to laser cut? And do you think you will add on additional features besides lighting for your final project?

    • I am not sure which type of wood I would utilize for laser cutting someone suggested birch wood, so I may look into that as an option and do further research into what type of wood I want. I don’t think I will add additional features besides the lighting because I am personally a fan of simplicity and find that simple designs are the best designs!

  • Austin,
I like your idea of using wood pieces to create beautiful wall art. The addition of lights that react to music would make this piece the life of the party, and would be at home in any room. Have you considered also incorporating static lights (such as a back glow)?
Are you leaning towards creating three dimensional art such as the flatiron art that you posted a picture of above? If so you could burn “SKO BUFFS” across the flatirons and give it you your younger brother. This would be a unique wall piece that all of the other freshman would be jealous of.

    • Haha the backglow portion should be integrated with my idea and the utilization of the LED strips that I plan of mounting to the back portion of this piece. As of now I am leaning to creating a three dimensional art such as the flatiron art posted above! I don’t think I would burn in SKO BUFFS into the piece and then give it to my little brother since he is going to CSU (big mistake on his part haha).

Hello, Austin! Great to hear that you want to make a gift out of wood! One of the people at my table, Patrick Bodine-Ellison is decently knowledgeable about laser cutting wood and recommends Baltic birch for laser cutting projects if you intend to proceed with that cutting method. I have also laser cut wood (though a long time ago) to make a very simple geometric moose head mount for our lakeside cabin. The end product had slight burning on the edges of each piece after being laser cut that I feel contributed well to the rustic aesthetic of it. Regarding your functional vision, do you think you might want to incorporate speakers and have it light up according to timbre, pitch, and/or volume of what is being played?

    • Baltic birch got it! Thank you for that information and if I need help I will definitely reach out to y’all since you have experience in this field. Regarding my functional vision, I honestly haven’t thought that far ahead, but will definitely consider the incorporation of speakers. My primary thought was to simply incorporate LED strips to the backside of the piece, that is connected to a Bluetooth device that is programmed to change colors and intensity with the music.
