Tropical Upcycle Aesthetic

The aesthetic I have chosen to incorporate into my upcycle project is the tropical aesthetic. I chose this because the topical aesthetics is one of my favorites. I think the tropical aesthetic captures a fun lifestyle that is missing during quarantine. I talk more about the things I like about the tropical aesthetic in my previous post. Along with this I think the tropical aesthetic is one that can be well captured within the context of upcycle. For my upcycle project the material that I am using is glass. I plan to break apart glass bottles and use the pieces to reassemble into a sculpture. The reason that I chose glass is that I think I can use it to bring in the tropical aesthetic. Specifically I want to try to bring out the look of beach glass. I think that beach glass has a strong tie to the tropical aesthetic and will help to bring the vacation and fun feeling into my project.

Another way I am trying to use the tropical aesthetic in my project is the use of colors. I have found that the tropical aesthetic tends to often have very strong greens and blues. I am trying to use glass with these colors to tie together the visuals of my project with the visuals of the tropical aesthetic. I am especially hoping that my blues help capture the look of the ocean since I think that the ocean is a huge part of the tropical aesthetic.

Going more into the ocean aspect of the tropical aesthetic. Along with the color of the ocean I hope to try to capture the form of the ocean as well. One thing that I am worried about is the limited form factor that I will have while working with glass. I hope to be able to shape the glass in my project in a way that will both be aesthetically pleasing to look at as well as capture the look of an ocean landscape. Overall I am excited about the challenge of using glass to bring the tropical aesthetic to life and am optimistic that I will be able to capture my vision of an ocean landscape.

  • Hi Andrew,
This sounds like a very fun aesthetic to work with and I think the material you choose to work with is going to be very cool. It will be interesting to see how you make the curved glass of a bottle work with your project. It will be interesting to see just how the form comes out on the project since I think you mentioned making a beach type landscape. Good Luck!

The curved nature of the glass bottles is something I had not thought about. I hope that I will be able to use it to my advantage to create some curved features of waves.

Andrew, I think your idea for the project is quite challenging and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! Glass is such a unique material that most people tend to stay away from as it can be kind of dangerous. I think the tropical aesthetic is more relevant right now than ever before. With COVID and other factors happening in todays world an escape from those to the ocean sounds amazing. I might also be bias since I just spent 10 days in Florida by the beach. However, I am curious what exactly beach glass is and how that can be incorporated into the ocean landscape. I think you could even focus your project on the ocean landscape individually or the beach glass individually and it would still be amazing. Either way,I love the vision and can’t wait to see what you create!

For my project I plan to focus on the ocean landscape predominantly. In terms of the beach glass that is just an extra bonus way I am hoping to tie in the ocean aesthetic.
