Rotating light and dark sculpture specifications and constraints

As I have discussed in previous posts my project is a bear that is half painted black and half white that is rotating and floating on top of an LED cloud.

It terms of aesthetic my first specification is that I want to capture the light and dark aesthetic. Specifically I am wanting to make sure that the dark paint on the bear and the LED lights from the cloud create an engaging contrast between each other.

The second specification that I want for my project is that I want the Bear to look 2D when viewed from the side that is painted black. This will only be achieved if I can get the paint dark enough to completely absorb all of the light.

The third specification that I have for my project is that I want the bear to look like it is floating. When it is rotating I do not want the motor to be visible when it is turning.

The forth specification I have for my project Is that I want the LED lights to be dispersed by the cloud enough that you cannot tell where the strips are. I want the cloud to have a generally uniform color.

The fifth specification that I have for my project is that I want the bear to rotate at a speed that is slow enough that It can be clearly seen without it being too blurry or hard to look at.

The top 5 constraints that I have for my project include

1. making sure my paint works well on Styrofoam

2. ensuring my motor is strong enough to rotate my object

3. verifying that my LED lights are bright enough to shine through my cloud material

4. allowing enough time for all of my materials to be shipped to my apartment

5. making sure I plan enough time to construct and document my assembly

  • Hey Andrew, I think you have all of your constraints laid out really well and set yourself up for success through the project. I am curious as to how you are going to make the motor not visible in your product, but I think the final product will turn out great!

Hi Andrew, this is an interesting project! You’ve laid out your specifications and constraints really nicely, I think that will help you to make design decisions as you move forward. I’m interested to know if you will be painting the other side of the bear that is not supposed to be all black. Some paint on this side could really make the bear pop and provide cool contrast to the dark side. Excited to see the final product!

Hey Andrew, cool project! It sounds like you’ve put some good thought into this idea and if you meet all of your specs / constraints I think you will end up with an awesome final project. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
