Upcycling Project: Minimalist desk/table light

I’ve decided to make a modern minimalist light out of recycled wood and a hanging light. The goal is to create a useful piece of art that combines the warm color of the filament light and the naturally bright color of the wood. The idea is not to have the light illuminate an entire room, but rather a small and intimate area that feels inviting and cozy. I’m thinking of putting it on a coffee table or small side table where you could comfortably drink coffee or read a book.

I’ll be using pallet wood from a large shipment from my senior design project that would have otherwise been thrown out. The wood will be planed and cut to a thickness of 1″ with whatever thickness the wood allows for because each section varies a lot. I’ll then shape the wood into a box enclosure with the hanging light in the center to direct the light forward. If the wood turns out to be too light of a shade I’ll stain it a darker color for more warmth.

    Hey Cameron,
    I really liked your idea of keeping the illumination warm and over a small area, It does feel cozy. Also, the use of bright wood is brilliant as it compliments the warm filament lighting. Will you be coating the wood with any coating (oil, lacquer) to brighten / give it a shiny finish?

    I love this aesthetic! Great use of materials from your senior design team. Have you considered giving the “lamp” a unique shape? I find that minimalism stands out when the product has a unique aspect to it. You could shape the wood in a non-traditional way!
