My current idea is sketched above. Right now I have a bevel gear set up and plan on 3D printing other gears and pipes to fit around my watch holder to accomplish a steampunk aesthetic. I am not very familiar with 3D printing and fear that there may be some issues printing gears as complex as these so I am also considering going for a minimalist aesthetic. If I limit the gears to only the ones necessary to make my device functional I can focus on making the holder as clean as possible. I’m not too sure what other aesthetics I can accomplish with my idea but am open to any suggestions.

I think you can go for some exceptionally crazy gear art if you like. The perfect example is the heart gear that’s currently in the basement of the book store, the gears aren’t symmetrical but they still work so I believe in your potential! if you want, you can change the style of watches that are being used, or even the items being displayed if you’re willing to as a different kind of aesthetic. I think it would look rad if you created a Hot Wheels display stand.
This is a really cool idea and I can’t wait to see how it comes together! In terms of aesthetics, I think it’s possible to have a variety of aesthetics while maintaining the same functional form. For example, having it be totally clean and refined would give it an industrial aesthetic while allowing for or introducing intentional weathering might shift it more toward an antique aesthetic.
