Digital Pictureframe Progress Report

So far I have been focusing my efforts on creating the picture frame first as I want to have a product at the end of this project before a bunch of renders.

I was able to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi 2 from a coworker for $5. This is what I plan to code to have the images, videos, and slideshows automatically boot up.

I am going to display the images on a BenQ monitor that my roommate was not using. I have taken off the bezel and monitor stand to reveal the aluminum frame. Here is an image of the monitor before :

I also bought a painting from the thrift store for $25. I did this because I like how the frame is large and ornate, which goes with my plan of combining an older style with modern technology to create a unique product. Since the frame has an overhang, I am planning on cutting it down  to fit perfectly around the monitor’s aluminum bezel.  I set up the monitor to play random images from around the world, which is the progress I have currently made.

The next step for me is to attach the frame to the screen. I plan to do this with a couple of supports and picture framing wire. Then I am going to attach the monitor controller to the back of the picture frame. After the device is built I will program the Raspberry Pi to display images and then begin working on Blender animations. I think this is a good structure for the project because I can relax and work on animating with no stress on the deadline. I am happy with how I was able to find all of the materials for only $30 because originally I thought I was going to spend $150-$200.

Here is the frame cut roughly to size with the monitor. I am planning on making four 45 degree angle cuts to join both pieces. I like the ornamental styling of the frame combined with the modern technology in the screen.

    Hi Luke,
Awesome project! I really like the picture frame as a way to hide the edges of the monitor bezel. Have you thought anymore about how you are going to hide the power cables? Excited to see how this turns out!

  • This is a very exciting and innovative project. I really like the combination of technology for the image display and the ornate frame, it is very aesthetically pleasing to me. How do you plan on adjusting the size of that frame so that it more properly fits the monitor? Also, respect for sourcing all these materials as cheaply as you did, very impressive!
