I have chosen to create a lamp in the space age aesthetic. After looking through my old materials and offcuts, I realized that I had many translucent plastic sheets. After holding these multicolored sheets up to a light, I was inspired to create a stained glass style lamp.

Space Age Style Lamp

Aesthetically, I am inspired by the furniture, lighting and clothing made by space age designers during the second half of the 20th century. Some notable pieces include the VP Globe pendant light by Verner Panton and the iconic Ball Chair designed by Eero Aarnio.

I am working on a design that incorporates streamlined, organic shapes and clean lines; below are a few loose sketches exploring the design of the lamp I intend to make.

Preliminary Sketches

Preliminary Sketch 2

I want to incorporate flowing lines and smooth, curved aerodynamic surfaces to reflect the space age aesthetic. Ideally, My next iteration will feature more curves and a sphere shaped housing for the lighting and filter assembly.

I want to use an incandescent bulb as the light source, but I am in the process of experimenting with led lights instead due to their versatility. I will construct these led modules using scrap cuts of led strips, further contributing to the upcycled nature of this lamp. I also want to include a dynamic element, allowing the user to adjust and manipulate the throw of the filtered light.

I plan to construct the base and housing components of the lamp out of 3D printed PLA or PETG. The design should be easily printable with minimal support material for efficiency.

  • This sounds like it will be fun to creat. The sketches are great and it makes it easier to visualize what you are talking about. What are the plastic sheets going to be used for? Are you upcycling any other materials?

Thanks for your comment Tyler! The plastic sheets will be used to filter the light output from the led. I am also upcycling scrap addressable led strips left over from installing the LYTMI tv backlights that sync up with the tv input. The installation process involves measuring the dimensions of the tv and trimming the included strip accordingly. The leftover strip of leds are useless on their own, so I am connecting them to an Arduino to control the strip and power the light of the lamp itself.
