When I think about my personal aesthetic, a big part of it comes from my Mexican heritage. I love bright colors, handcrafted details, and traditional patterns that tell a story. Growing up, I saw these everywhere in Mexican ceramics, embroidered textiles, and the bold colors of traditional homes and markets. These designs feel warm, familiar, and full of life. There is something about the mix of rich colors, natural textures, and intricate patterns that I have always been drawn to. I want to incorporate that into my final project in a meaningful way.

For my project, I am making a spice rack spinner because food and cooking are such a big part of my culture. Some of my best memories are in the kitchen, surrounded by the smell of spices, homemade meals, and family conversations. I want this spice rack to reflect that and feel like something that belongs in a home filled with warmth and tradition. I am making this for my mom, so I want it to be both beautiful and useful. To bring in my aesthetic, I want to add traditional Mexican pottery or ceramic designs to the rack. I have always loved the look of Talavera tiles with their bold colors and hand-painted patterns. I am thinking about incorporating something similar into the design.

I still need to figure out exactly how I will do this. Maybe I will paint the wood with patterns inspired by Mexican ceramics, or I could find a way to add actual tile or ceramic elements to it. Either way, I want it to have that handmade, traditional feel while still being functional. This project is a mix of things I love. It combines crafting, cultural design, and creating something for someone important to me. I am excited to start working on it and see how to combine all these elements.

Hi, I think this is an amazing project idea! Mexican heritage is so special and when you were talking about your memories growing up I know exactly what smell of spices you are talking about. I love the idea of putting some sort of Talavera tiles on the rack! I was thinking you could maybe get some super small tiles from amazon and put some designs of your own on them! Those tiles are so nostalgic and capture the perfect vibe for a kitchen, I definitely think you should incorporate it into your project one way or another!

Hi Ariana, I absolutely adore this idea! I can see your vision clearly. The combination of the natural materials and colorful details is bound to make your desired aesthetic shine. Do you plan on building the structure of the spice rack from scratch, or using a preexisting base then adding your own elements on top of it? I’m looking forward to seeing how this project turns out!

  • Hi Ariana, I love how you are tapping into your personal memories and also your heritage to produce something both personal and functional! Definitely follow your aesthetic inspiration despite the resources – ceramic or wood I think this will turn out fantastic.
What do you have planned for the rotation of this spice rack that you’ve mentioned? I hope that you find a good way to build in stability so that your aesthetic is able to shine as the final product is used.
