Design Preview Report Stained Glass

Overview

For my final project, I am focusing loosely on the reminiscence theme. Since a lot of my childhood is surrounded by stained glass, I wanted to do something with stained glass and/or have the stained glass look.

I am planning to make a glass terrarium. I want to use mixed materials like glass, and wood to make sure the terrarium is leak proof and has some stability especially at the bottom. I think it’d be a nice look as well to have glass and a darker wood to compliment each other.

My design functionalities are:

  • Creating the over structure:
    • I am planning to use a wood base and wood sides to create a general stable structure for the terrarium.
    • It will have glass panes on the sides of the box to cover all the side s except the front facing one.
    • I will probably makeshift the top of the box with a glass lid
  • Making of the stained glass look:
    • After assembling the glass to the structure, I am going to use stained glass paint to make a cool design to the terrarium.
  • Moving part
    • I will start adding a little door to the open section with hinges so it can open/close
      • still not sure if i want to add this because I like how it looks open
Challenges

Although I wanted to create a box with stained glass, I had constraints with the budget of making it. There were materials and specific machinery that is needed but it was out of my price range to make it. I decided to achieve the aesthetic by painting on the glass with the stained glass paint instead of actually putting together pieces of different colored glass.

Another challenge is making the box leak proof especially if I decide to store plants inside. I think wood was a good way to go instead of an all glass look.

Inspirations

Here are the inspirations that I found to make the overall aesthetic of what I want to achieve. I am looking to use more wood than glass.

Design Plans

With a wood structure, it will hold up the overall construction of terrarium base. I will then add the glass panes to the exterior here are the sketches for what I plan:

This is such a fun idea for a project! I think the wood will look great and serve a good purpose to prevent leaking. What do you plan on using to I guess glue the glass and wood together? I also think if you used clear acrylic it could serve the same sort of vibes as the glass, this is just an idea for if the glass turns out to be harder to work with than you think. Super excited for the end result! Good luck!

Hey Jessica, this is a super cool project idea! I like the idea of painting on the glass instead of doing the more time and equipment-intensive version of soldering. Is there a specific type of paint you use on glass? I’m looking forward to seeing the final product, good luck!
