Main Project Report 1 – Cherished River

I stuck fairly consistent with the original plan as this has been done by many people and is something I’ve always wanted to accomplish.Β  I feel in love with working with wood during my invention and innovation class and although there was not shaping or cutting for this piece, it still took time and skill.Β  Prior to this project, I built a framed box out of bamboo for a project that incorporated electronics as an indication for in office/out of office as a stop light design.Β  My inspiration just really came from my enjoyment of wood working as well as love for nature and I felt like this was a perfect opportunity to explore this.

The vision I had for my project was to develop something real, simple, grounded, and attune with nature.Β  I wanted to capture the detail of the grain wood as well as accent it with the metallic grey pigment in the middle.Β  Initially it was meant to be black but I went and saw other pigment that I thought would have a nice touch to the project.Β  I’m happy with the choice that I made.Β  The specifications I developed for its function was to sit level, be around 3’x2′, have a clean/professional finish, and have a drawer.Β  I didn’t meet the specification of adding a dynamic portion to the table due to time from mishaps during the fabrication process of pouring the epoxy.Β  The artistic vision was really simple and to bring nature into the home.Β  I love hiking and the outdoors and I feel as if this brings a grounded setting in the home.

I drew a very simple sketch for my design and stuck with that though out the project.Β  I felt like it was fairly simple as I had the dimensions laid out.Β  The only major change I made were the choices for the legs and cutting about a 1/2″ off the length of the table to remove the dripping epoxy on the side of the table.Β  I’m super happy with the way it turned out.Β  The aesthetic is exactly how I pictured it to be and even better.Β  It is simple, grounded, and brings nature into background our busy lives.

I love how your project evolved from both past experience and personal interests like hiking, it adds a lot of authenticity to the final piece. As you continue building, have you considered experimenting with different types of wood to explore new textures or tones?

This sounds like a really meaningful project, especially given your connection to woodworking and nature. I’m wondering, what kind of challenges did you face during the epoxy pour, and how did they influence your decision to skip the dynamic element in your original plan?
