Overall, I really enjoyed this class and everything it taught me. There are so many aesthetics and each one is very unique. This class gave me an opportunity to explore many of them through my own research, the class, or other classmates posts. I have also been able to explore my own aesthetic and its relationship to various aesthetics.

The class began with me exploring the vintage aesthetic, which is one of my favorite. I had not looked into the history of these aesthetic before and this gave me the opportunity to explore an aesthetic that I work super closely with. Vintage is something that I surround myself with often and being able to explore how it started helped influence my view of it. This was my first time truly understanding where an aesthetic came from and it aided me in my future research.

Aesthetics Exploration – The Vintage Aesthetic

I then began my upcycle project, which was to create a ski bum hat. I choose this project for a few reasons. I wanted to create something that reflect the ski bum aesthetic because it has always been an aesthetic I have been interested in. Secondly, I love to sew and really want to create something that I would actually use. And lastly, I have been wanting to make one of these four point hats and I knew how much fleece there is at the thrift stores so I knew it would be easy to source materials. This project allowed me to explore the ski bum aesthetic while also creating something I have been wanting to make.

Four Point Hat – “Ski Bum” Aesthetic

This lead me into my final project. We were asked to explore our own aesthetics and I knew I wanted to create something for my final project that would tie into both my own aesthetic while also the ski bum aesthetic. My own aesthetic is hard to pin down. I think I pull from a bunch of different aesthetics and use others for inspiration. I do love vintage and a pop of color. The ski bum aesthetic is all about being resourceful, thrifty, and having the mountains as a number one priority. I knew I wanted to play on the upcycle project and continue to use a recycled material to create this final project. I looked all over the internet and found ski bookends. I have been in need of new bookends and knew this would be an exciting project for my bookshelf and for the use of my skills.

Ski Bookends – Part 2

I sourced a pair of skis from Facebook Marketplace. Then I cut, glued, and painted the tip and tail to reflect bookends. I am very happy with my final project and their structural integrity. I learned a lot through this process and I am excited to continue to use this piece on my bookshelf.

Overall, I loved this class and everything I learned. It pushed me to explore my own aesthetic and use my skills and learn new ones. I have a new appreciation for aesthetics and will continue to use the skills I learned in this class.
