In November of 1959, Jacques Plante (pronounced zhock plont) introduced the goalie mask into the National Hockey League made of fiberglass molded to his face. And thus a wave began of goalies finally wearing face protection. It wasn’t until Doug Favel of the Philadelphia Flyers debuted a colorful mask ahead a Halloween game in 1970. Plante, Favel, and Gerry Cheevers became pioneers of goalie masks not only as protection, but as art. In, my opinion, the goalie masks of the 1970’s and early 1980’s while albiet not the most protective but are among the most iconic. A flare of personality expressed as part of the player’s equipment became a defining feature of every NHL team. My final project is to design a goalie mask similar to those shown in slide 4-6 that is wearable at the very least and matches the aesthetic of the iconic 70’s and 80’s masks.
