Cardboard Electric Car

The group quickly narrowed in on a smooth, minimal, no grill design. The reference point we kept coming back to was EVE from WALL-E which helped guide the almost organic silhouette that reads as futuristic and minimalist. Electric cars don’t have grills because they don’t need them, and we wanted the design to actually reflect that rather than just slap a traditional car shape onto cardboard.
From there we started building and testing. We skinned some cardboard down to make a minimal grill alternative something that gestured at the feature without committing to it. Most of the session ended up focused on the headlights, which turned out to have a lot more variables than expected. Hot glue was the first attempt. It didn’t get where we wanted. We moved to laser cut acrylic, then started experimenting with a heat gun to shape it, going through several iterations before the form started clicking. To get more glow out of the lights, we added a middle diffusion beam. This helped dilute the light slightly to spread it more evenly rather than having a sharp point source. That made a noticeable difference in how finished it looked.
