Upcycle Project – Grunge Messenger Bag

For the first project of the semester we had to make some object that embodies an aesthetic out of reused materials. I decided that I wanted to tackle the grunge aesthetic, and after some serious brainstorming and a major project pivot I decided to make a messenger bag. I started by sketching out a vague idea (as seen above) and then free-styled the rest!

I went to Art Parts in Boulder to find the materials for my project, where I got most of my fabric scraps, safety pins, and other knick knacks to add on to the bag once it was done. After that I went to Goodwill and picked up two old flannel shirts and a belt to use as some more fabric and the clasp of the bag respectively.

This project was a lot of fun, and working with all reused materials was quite a challenge as I had to basically create the fabric I was using before I could actually use it since it was a patchwork of different fabrics. I’m really happy with how it turned out and I use it to this day!
