For my upcycle project I choose to make something I wanted and then applied an aesthetic to it. For the main project I would like to do it the other way around: to determine an aesthetic, then apply it to a thing.
I have yet to determine either an aesthetic or an object, but here are some of my thoughts towards selecting an aesthetic:
- Hot rod/muscle cars
- Aviation
- Spaceship
- Machinery
- Chrome
These things all bear a sort of industrial origin and my interest in them probably tied to my interest in mechanical engineering. I would like to apply the aesthetic of something that interests me to something that might otherwise view as boring.

Combine them! Could be truly awesome.
I think it’s awesome that you chose to star with an aesthetic and want to make something designed around it. I’m sure you have plenty of your own ideas, but for the up-cycle project a few people used old gears and scrap metal to make some cool in-home objects such as some bookends a wine holder, and a jewelry box. You could take a look at theirs and perhapse get some inspiration.
