Final Project Inspiration

For my final project, I am thinking of making a wall clock. One of the most important feedback I got for my upcycle project was that I put too much effort on the functionality of the product, and neglected the aesthetics. For that reason, I have decided to choose a project that has a simple functionality, but gives me a lot of room for aesthetics. There are infinite designs and themes that can be used for this wall clock.

I have yet to decide on the theme I am going for. If anyone has cool suggestions, please feel free to write them in your comments. The general direction I am thinking of taking would be a mechanical engineering theme. For example, use tools for numbers, steel texture for the background and maybe something to represent a drawing. one cool clock I found that would look close to what I am thinking of is shown below.

If you’re looking for mechanical engineering concepts to include you could try doing a grandfather clock where the time is kept by a pendulum being wound up. We went over that pretty recently in my System Dynamics class and I think it could open doors for further design.

I love the idea of incorporating mechanical engineering aspects into the design. I feel like you have a lot of options to choose from, like material, tools, machinery. It would be kind of cool to make each number a different material or tool, almost giving each number it’s own aesthetic within the entire mechanical aesthetic of the project. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Hello Aziz, it would be really cool if you could incorporate gears and bolts into your clock. I really like the idea of incorporating mechanical engineering themes into your clock, as you have a lot of cheap material options to go with. You should look into ways you could include 3D printed or laser cut materials as well, given the ease at which you can manufacture and design them. I am excited to see how your project comes out!
