Upcycle Inspiration: A Tribute to Ovechkin

For my Upcycling project, I searched for awhile for inspiration. Artistic expression is not one of my strong suits, so I decided to search my hobbies and favorite pass times in order to find the answer. I finally arrived on my idea, which combined my deep state pride for my home-state of Maryland, my love of D.C. and Baltimore, and also my favorite sports hero of all time, Alexander Ovechkin.

When the Captials won the Stanley cup in 2018, I was there in D.C. for the post game “celebration” (riot) and also the parade. What was most hilarious and iconic to me about the team’s win was that Ovi went on a week-long bender whilst never letting the Stanley cup out of his grip. As such I plan to create a contemporary art piece paying homage to Ovi, the great state of Maryland, and my love of brewskis to create a Stanley cup out of recycled beer cans and metallic pieces.

My plan is to seek out all the beer from Maryland I can find, as I think it is more appropriate to Ovi if I used beer from the great state itself. This may add to the overall cost of my Upcycle project, but I dare not offend the great god himself.

For the chalice on top of my tower I am searching for a recycled piece of metal in the shape of a bowl. There are a few avenues I can take here to obtain said piece. I could forge it myself, purchase one from a store, or maybe check out local thrift stores for anything that could match this description. The combination of all materials will either be through use of liquid adhesives, tape, or any other methods.

Hello Zach! Very cool project! It’s great to see you have so much passion and motivation for this project! I would recommend you buying a decent amount of those Maryland beers and throwing a huge house party in order to get a bunch of those cans so the beers don’t go to waste! As for the bowl shaped metal something that could be found at the dollar store could also be helpful! Good luck!

    • Kensue,
Thanks for the comment! The issue of getting this many empty cans is the most prevalent to be honest, but I have enlisted the help of some good friends, and I actually went to goodwill to purchase the bowl! Thanks for your advice.
