Personal Aesthetic and Main Project Plans

When I think about my personal aesthetic, I think of the way that I dress. I’d like to think that I dress pretty nicely; and I’ve had friends compliment my style, even if I’m just wearing Adidas track pants and a simple hoodie. To summarize, they say that there’s a certain air of coolness, and that I make anything look good. I do take care in choosing what I wear, so I’d like to believe this is true. How I dress is one of the first things that anyone, especially when meeting me for the first time, will notice, so I like to put effort in my outward appearance; but it also is an indicator of my personal aesthetic.

I am Asian, and grew up in an Asian household, and as a kid, I was influenced by a lot of Asian culture, like anime, video games, etc.; and this led me to start looking into how Asian people dress, once I started caring about my fashion sense. They tend to stick to a minimalist style, but the intricacy lies in the mixture of materials used in the clothes they wear. For example, a solid sweater could have different textures if it’s made of wool, or cotton, and can be ribbed or have a pattern sewn into it; but from afar, you can’t really notice these qualities. The type of sweater plays a role too; it can be a crewneck, hoodie, turtleneck, etc. This minimalist approach where the details lay in the intrinsic characteristics, like type of material and type of clothing, closely fits the aesthetic that I’ve been studying so far this semester.

I will probably stick to this aesthetic, since it’s familiar to me, but I’m not quite sure what I want make for my main project yet. I know it has to be dynamic, and the first thing that comes to mind when I think of “dynamic” is LEDs; they can change in color and brightness, and when used with many other LEDs, you can create something that can be interactive and/or fluid. Another thought is that I can create something that isn’t tangible; for example, I can create an interactive web app or something, although I’m not sure if that would be appropriate for this class.

  • Hey Josh, your aesthetic explanation was interesting and cool. I think your idea for having dynamic LED’s would be a great idea especially if you create fluid movements like you said. I also think a non-tangible idea would be cool to see as well. Excited to see where you take this.

I love the way you want to express the culture you are deeply influenced with! As an Asian student, I found the style on trend sometimes can be very different from the ones in the states. Also, adding LEDs is a cool idea! Looking forward to your dynamic Asian style work!
