Specifications and Constraints

My final project idea is to create a vertical garden clock, and the primary decision is to choose between using preserved plants or live plants. If I opt for preserved plants, such as mosses, the process would be much simpler, and the artifact would require minimal maintenance. On the other hand, using live plants has its advantages, such as providing a more natural and aesthetic look and offering health benefits like purifying the air. However, using live plants means that I need to consider certain factors before proceeding with the project. The material used for the clock is an important factor since materials like wood could degrade over time if the clock holds moisture at all times. I also need to find a way to keep the clock mechanism and electronics dry to prevent any damage from moisture.

To ensure that the clock is easily maintainable, I need to select components that require minimal upkeep. It is also crucial to choose plants that are easy to change and waterable. Opting for plants that require low maintenance and do not shed excessively is essential to ensure that the clock remains visually appealing. Further, I plan on using a battery-operated quartz clock that can be purchased online inexpensively. This will eliminate the risk of short circuits and ensure that the clock is safe and functional.

Overall, creating a clock integrated into a vertical garden requires careful planning and execution to achieve the desired effect. A well-designed clock can add to the calming effect of the vertical garden, making it an ideal addition to any indoor space. The vertical garden clock can be used as a functional piece of art to bring a sense of tranquility and calmness to the viewer.

I really like the idea so far as well. I encountered a few problems with my upcycle project that I would more than be happy to talk to you about if you are planning on using real plants. Your plant selection would be very important! etst1878@colorado.edu

I really like the examples you’ve shown, I think this will be a really cool project overall. I can’t wait to see how you solve the design challenges you mentioned and what materials you end up using.
