My Personal Aesthetic

Currently, my personal aesthetic that I said I happen to be inspired by would have a blend of modern minimalism and organic modern. I am particularly drawn to the color schemes of these aesthetics, which feature clean, neutral tones that are easy on the eyes and lack stark contrasts. This preference is reflected in how I arrange my room and even in how I dress recently. While I favor neutral colors, I make exceptions for jet black items. Black often works well with most color schemes, but in this aesthetic, it tends to stand out as a centerpiece or a functional object I interact with regularly, such as my laptop, earbuds or microphone. Such as example that can kind of represent a minimalist room aesthetic is show down below:

Inspirations from 20th-Century Movements

One of the primary inspirations for my aesthetic and I think my only inspiration is the minimalism movement, as it happens to tie in with my personal aesthetic. This influence is evident in my upcycling projects, where I aim for designs that seamlessly blend into the room’s surroundings, although the results could always improve, I strive for simplicity and cohesion. This aesthetic happens to strive for simplicity in the way an object is presented, often opting for a neutral palette so that when presenting, the coloring of the piece doesn’t overpower the object itself and uses relatively simple geometric shapes such as squares and circles. It started up around the 1960s in contrast to minimalism and abstract expressionism. It rather just presents the piece how it is.

Personal Experiences that Shaped My Aesthetic

Interestingly, I also find inspiration in environments like IKEA. While I’ve never visited IKEA myself, their minimalist furniture and neutral color palettesβ€”dominated by whites, blacks, and greysβ€”resonate with my design ideals. Another surprising influence is the stormtrooper aesthetic, which features a striking contrast between black and white. Despite the contrast, I still believe it fits within a minimalist framework and informs how I envision my projects. the image below show what I happen to mean by stormtrooper aesthetic:

Will My Main Project Stay in This Aesthetic?

As for my project, I think that it will still stay within the realm of minimalism but it incorporates that of the storm trooper aesthetic. The reason being so is that I don’t plan on keeping this project for myself as I happen to give it to someone that has a better use for it currently.

My Project: Adjustable Microphone Boom Arm

For my project, I plan to design and create an adjustable microphone boom arm. The primary goal is to make it modular by allowing parts to be added or removed to adjust its length as needed. This adjustability is critical for portability, as I frequently move between my apartment and my family home. Both spaces share a similar aesthetic: minimal, neutral colors and a focus on simplicity, with just the essentials like a bed and desk. Below is an example of my desk size for reference:

The adjustability also addresses a practical issue: the different desk sizes in my two locations. My apartment desk, for example, is much smaller in width, so a pre-made boom arm might clutter the space. While I understand that boom arms are meant to be moved out of the way, I want my design to feel unobtrusive and tailored to my specific needs.

Future Use of the Boom Arm

Ultimately, if my design is successful, I plan to give the finished boom arm to my brother, who has more use for it than I do. I’ve found that I don’t use my USB microphone as often anymore, so I’d be happy to pass it along to someone who can better appreciate its functionality.

Progress:

  • Build CAD model and order other materials
  • Print using onyx
  • Hopefully paint
  • Test

I like how you connect it to both modern design influences like IKEA and a more personal touch with the stormtrooper aestheticβ€”it’s a cool contrast that still fits within the minimalist framework. The plan for your adjustable microphone boom arm sounds super functional while staying true to your aesthetic. How do you plan to balance the clean, simple look of minimalism with the moving parts and adjustability of your design? Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

  • Hi Daniel,
I thought your post conveys a strong sense of your personal aesthetic in really good detail, particularly in how minimalism influences both your design choices and daily life. I liked how you combined inspirations such as IKEA and the stormtrooper aesthetic which made your design choices feel intentional and well thought out. How do you plan to balance the minimalist aesthetic with the functional complexity of a fully adjustable boom arm?
