I have been a little busy with other school things and also was just sick for a whole week so I haven’t gotten much done on this project this week. So far for my project I have gotten my materials and supplies from the scrap woods in the Btu. I think I have enough of wood for my project but if I do not I can always go out to buy more, or just look for some more from the Lab.

I have also already made my project model to help guide me through the process of building my project. I made my model on Sketchup and am pretty happy with how it turned out. In my model I added the right dimensions of the wood I am planning on using, so It is a to scale model so far. In my original sketch I had not planned how I was going to build my stand, but after thinking about the process of building it when modeling, I realized that I needed something on the inside of the legs to help me make sure that the shelf between them was straight, and the bars that hold the shelf up are even. So in my new model I added extra bars on the legs to help me with that for the top and bottom shelf. For the extra bars, I plan on using a piece of wood that I am not already using for the rest of my project. I’m going to use a thinner piece of wood for this part of my build. I am doing this because the extra pieces are being used on kind of a different angle, and so I don’t think it will be too noticeable/take away from the overall look. But I also think that the difference in thickness adds a nice touch to my stand.

My next steps are to take the wood I have now and measure out my markings to guide me when I go to cut it. I need to make sure all measurements are all the same and make sure to be very careful when cutting my pieces and take that process very slow. After cutting I will sand and put together my project, then leave it to dry overnight and after that I will add a stain of my choice. I also need to figure out what stain I want to use.

  • This is an amazing looking project! I was wondering what kinds of wood stain finishes you are considering, and how do you think each one might affect the final look or feel of your stand.

This is a super cool project. Your SketchUp model sounds really helpful for planning. Did you find that visualizing it in 3D helped you catch any other design challenges you hadn’t thought of before?
