Coffee Accessory Organizer: Part 1

The journey of this coffee organizer project began with inspiration from multiple design sources that shaped both its form and function. My initial aesthetic leaned toward an β€œurban ivy” lookβ€”a blend of industrial-modern elements and organic greenery, inspired by Seattle’s shipyards and skyline. As the project evolved, so did my visual language. I shifted toward a warmer, rustic-bohemian palette, taking cues from handmade furniture, vintage shelf brackets, and bohemian interior design.

Inspiration for shelf

These sources informed both the aesthetic and functionality of my final design. All outside imagery and design concepts I referenced were either modified or reimagined to fit my own unique approach. Any reused visuals are cited directly in the captions (to be added when uploading).

Vision and Specifications

I wanted the final piece to feel like more than just a shelfβ€”something sculptural, yet practical. My goal was to create a dedicated organizer for coffee essentials that could sit above or beside a coffee station, holding both mugs and tools in a compact, visually rich format.

Here are the key functional and aesthetic goals I established early on:

  • Function: The piece must hold multiple coffee mugs securely, store accessories like filters or scoops, and fit on a small kitchen wall or countertop.

  • Form: Compact footprint, with vertical organization. Drawers for small-item storage. Cutouts or compartments for mugs.

  • Aesthetic: Rustic-bohemian, with natural textures (wood grain), warm tones (dark walnut stain), and small handcrafted details.

Sketches and Design Development

The earliest iterations were based on a flat shelf with an integrated drawer. I explored several variationsβ€”some featuring rope-hung brackets, others with wall-mounted steel supports. These early ideas felt too open or lacked definition.

Initial design

After reevaluating, I pivoted to a more purpose-built organizer format. This included:

  • Individual mug slots or cutouts

  • A hidden drawer for tools

  • A more compact frame with clean, vertical edges

  • Warm wood tones with visible grain to evoke a handmade feel

CAD and Final Design

Using CAD software, I translated my hand sketches into a precise digital plan. This helped finalize the dimensions of the drawer, the placement of structural elements, and the spacing for mug compartments. The CAD model includes all panels that will be laser cut, as well as an exploded view for assembly planning.

Final CAD design

The body of the organizer will be constructed from pine plywood, an accessible material with consistent grain and good laser-cutting properties. The plywood will be stained to resemble walnutβ€”providing the depth and warmth I want, without exceeding my budget.

Final Product

Panels will be joined using a combination of wood glue and brad nails for stability. The drawer will operate on purchased sliders for smooth movement and a finished feel. I also plan to add greenery or woven elements as finishing touches to enhance the bohemian character.
