Final Report Part 2 – Art Nouveau Mobile Fabrication

To create my artifact I primarily used 2 methods of construction, a tube bender and jewelry pliers. The first and most used tool to create the Art Nouveau Mobile was a tube bender, shown below. This tool allowed for me to set up series of dies and stops to create precise bends in the wire that I used to create my mobile. The images below show the process chronologically, from placing the wire in the bender, with dies et up, to the final product of the hanging mobile piece.

The other primary tool that I used was wire working pliers and baling wire. Using the tools shown below I was able to bend baling wire to create my artifact.

Using these two methods of construction I was able to iteratively create my piece. I really enjoyed the freedom that working in this medium offered, so a lot of the design was done through trial and error. At the end of the day I ended up with quite a few proto-mobiles that were much smaller scale and used to figure out some the elements I would use in the final project. Many of these were then absorbed into the final mobile. The whole process took me about a month working for 30 minutes – a few hours each day slowly playing around with the forms until I was happy with the final product.
