Progress – Eye of Agamotto

This week I’ve made meaningful progress on my Eye of Agamotto project, shifting from design planning into early prototyping and material testing. With the concept locked in, I focused on preparing the mechanical and visual features that bring the Eye to life.

Finalizing the Design

I finalized the overall shape and detailing of the Eye based on references from the Doctor Strange films. I paid special attention to the layered front shell and the engraved patterns around the core. I mocked up the design in Fusion 360, including the two-part shell and the internal housing for the LED and battery.

Prototyping the Shell

I printed a rough prototype of the outer casing using PLA on a BTU 3D printer. This test helped verify the scale and comfort if worn as a pendant. The size feels good, and the details printed well enough that I’ll only need minimal sanding before painting.

LED + Diffusion Testing

I also tested a green LED with different diffusion layers to simulate the Time Stone’s glow. A clear resin disc backed by a layer of frosted tape gave the best result — soft, even, and bright. I plan to embed this behind the Eye’s central lens with a push-button or motion-triggered activation.

Mechanism Concept

I’m still debating between a sliding shell or a hinge-based mechanism to “open” the Eye. This week I built a cardboard mockup to try both, and I’m leaning toward a hinge design — it’s easier to fabricate and aligns more closely with the cinematic version.

Next Steps

  • Finalize the inner housing design and print the LED mount.

  • Paint and finish the first complete outer shell prototype.

  • Integrate the LED circuit and test battery options (likely a small coin cell for compactness).

  • Begin assembling the hinge and test fitment.

So far, I’m happy with the progress. It’s been rewarding to see the Eye take shape physically after weeks of planning. The glowing green core is looking especially cool — it’s already giving off some major “sorcerer vibes.”

I like you LED diffusion method. Can you show some examples/pictures of how exactly you did that?

This is awesome! Did you make this CAD model from scratch?? The design is very impressive, I especially like the criss-cross texturing across the surface of the 3D part, how did you add this texture? I’m excited to see how this project turns out!

Awesome progress, the LED diffusion sounds really effective. How are you planning to secure the hinge while keeping it wearable as a pendant?
