Post 10: Space Cowboy CAD Progress

The progress that I’ve made thus far mostly consists of the CAD modeling and material sourcing. So far, this is the CAD model that I have running.

I still need to source an IKEA Molnart light bulb to make more accurate measurements for the bulb. For now, this model is based on the following model I’ve downloaded from the SketchUp warehouse: SUNNEBY cord set with MOLNART lampbulb IKEA – Model – 3D Warehouse

I’ve incorporated several elements of both a “space” and “cowboy” theme in here so far. The wooden base is inherently rustic, and I’m planning on laser engraving logos like the Wyoming cowboy logo and others into the wood. Every gray part will be 3D printed, and was designed based on some design elements from the LAKON: Diamondback Scout from ELITE: Dangerous:

My future efforts are going to be designing the base of the lamp around the specific interface I ordered from amazon so that the 3D print fits perfectly on top of it. And, since the bundle of wooden rounds that I ordered has 6 in the package, I intend to use a few to test several different laser cut designs on for the cowboy aspect of the lamp.

Here is a quick test render in Fusion of how the CAD design should turn out. Excitement is growing!

Your CAD model and renders look great, really excited to see how this ends up looking in person. How do you plan on attaching the rings to give them that ‘floating’ effect? Great job so far!

  • This CAD looks beautiful! For the wood portion, are you planning on doing the fillets on the wood before or after the laser engraving?

Hey Alex! Thats very kind of you, thanks! I don’t think I’ll actually end up filleting the design, I thought the fillet would properly eventuate the bark of the wood.
