Claire Markus – Aesthetics in EE

Throughout this semester I’ve had the opportunity to hone my ability to design beautiful systems. Too often as engineers we think only of function, in this course I was challenged to consider form, and to create working systems complying with a variety of artistic movements.

I began my journey through design by exploring the Mediterranean revival aesthetic. I wanted to create a tech product that didn’t fall into the stereotypical hyper-modern sleek design form. Instead I created a weather indicator art piece inspired by Moroccan tile-work that feels human and homey.

For my next major project I created a levitating anime mask as a gift for my boyfriend, this project included a more challenging circuit than the previous and a more unfamiliar aesthetic. I was inspired by the amazing maglev Japanese trains breaking speed records. I made bold design choices and ultimately created a product that feels like it could be hiding out in futuristic Japan.
