Graduation is coming up and I’m about to start a new chapter in my life. I’m stepping out into a brave new world and want to be ready for anything which is why my design concept centers around being adaptable. I am not quite sure what my living situation will be after college but I know I like to have a lot of greenery around the house. That’s why I would like to build a planter that could either stand on its own or hang.
One of the apartments I am looking at has rafters. I would like to incorporate an urban downtown feel to the apartment and thought it might be cool to hang the planter from these rafters. In the event that I don’t get this apartment and don’t have another hanging option in the place I do pick, I would like the option to have it free standing.
To keep with the urban downtown aesthetic I want to use stained wood and unfinished steel for the materials. I also want it to be modular so that I can easily take it with me when I move. The bottom shelf will be removable to add an extra row of plants when it is hanging. I have made a preliminary prototype and CAD model to visualize the idea.
I think i will really enjoy having this in my apartment and it will give it a very homey feel. It will brighten up the room and be my first bit of furniture in my new home.

You have a really nice prototype to start the project with. I recommend using invisible glue to have a nicer clean look.
