Carnovsky RGB art

Carnovsky create and exhibit their unique style of art under different lighting colors and conditions revealing and hiding different aspects of their work. Layering different compositions with different tinted colors, making the magic happen when it interacts with the lighting and your perception. This art style uses some of the same basic principles used in ‘low tech’ 3D imaging (like the red and blue glasses) to achieve that desired effect. I am a fan of this type of art, and I think it has merit as a piece that can be appreciated in all lighting conditions. Unfortunately, I don’t have a selective light color picker for my lighting options where I might want to display a piece like this, which I feel like is a common barrier. Thus begins the technical plans of my project, creating a frame with LED lighting built in so that I can isolate different colors to get the full effect of this aesthetic. I am also going to generate my own art for the frame, but I think that I will only do the Red/Blue scale, because I feel like the Yellows in the Carnovsky pieces bleed into the effect of the Blue lighting, and do not show as well under green as compared to the others.

    Hi Chris
This is a really interesting project that combines art and technology to create a unique experience for the viewer. I love the idea of using LED lighting to isolate different colors and reveal different aspects of the artwork. It’s also great that you’re planning to generate your own art for the frame, which will make it even more personalized and special.
The project looks like a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to your final art piece.

    Hi Chris,

This is awesome! I as well have never heard of Carnovsky till now. It’s clear how inspirational those displays can be. Your frame design is well thought out and you seem ready to begin the fabrication process. Looking forward to seeing the final product!

Your piece is very exciting! I’ve never seen Carnovsky’s work before, but the images you’ve included are incredibly striking, as one is essentially viewing three unique images at once. I am a big fan of your plan to avoid the yellow colors, as the darker reds and blues show through really easily. I know you’re planning on creating an LED frame without a color picker, but have you considered working with the LEDs in combination with Arduino? I think you could fairly easily make a pair of buttons to switch from red to blue, which could make your design more interactive with the viewers. Good luck!
