Project Update 4/13 | Peter

I have spent the last week designing the rest of the parts for my mendocino motor. A big hurdle was that my 3D printer has been acting up and a large part of my design is dependent on printed parts. This has greatly hindered my progress this week. I have all the parts that I need and am currently prototyping different options for mounting all of the necessary parts to the axle along with the base of the motor.

I have decided that I will laser cut the base for the motor out of acrylic and have the designs mocked up in Solidworks just about ready to be put in the laser cutter.

If you are struggling with your 3D printer, there are several of them on campus that you could use as a backup. I’m curious about how the acrylic will look with the rest of your motor. I agree with Elyse, clear might look really cool.

This sounds like you are on the right track Pete. That is so frustrating that the 3D printer was acting up. Do you think you’ll have enough time though to finish it up or did/do you have to use a different 3D printer? I believe the acrylic will work well. Do you know what color or thickness you will be using to work with your aesthetic. I think a black, white, clear, or frosted look will really help with your design. Clear might make it appear like it is floating as well.
