I am making some good progress on my upcycle project. I have just about finalized my design the guitar in terms of construction, opting to use f holes to provide some acoustics, and I am planning on putting in a piezo acoustic pick up which I will be ordering this weekend. I ordered a cigar box from Facebook marketplace last week, but it has been out for delivery for sometime, so I’m not sure if I will be able to use. I plan to use a 2×4 to make the neck and headstock, and the guitar is going to be used for slide, which means I won’t have to worry about frets or action as much as a straight up guitar.

Piezo Pickup

I’m going to dedicate all of next week and the weekend to constructing the guitar, but if I get all the materials I need, hopefully it will not be more than several days worth of construction. I am still unsure what I will be building the bridge and nut out of, but that should be a simple build. I am hopeful but a little concerned about whether I will be able to build the guitar by the deadline, or if I have to simplify what I am doing. Ideally I will not have to, and hopefully I will be able to build it to my goals. Wish me luck that my goals are achievable.

  • Hi Garret. this project seems super cool! I love the way you mapped things out. I am extremely curious about the usage of the cigar box. How will it be applied? and will any modifications be done to it? will the cigar box be accessible and useable or just for the aesthetic?

Thanks for the comment Adlai! I was going to use the cigar box as the main body and sound originator of the guitar. I am debating whether or not to put a real sound hole inside of the cigar box, but I do want to make sure that the cigar box can be opened once the guitar is done.

  • Hello Garrett,
I really like your idea to make a guitar. I’m a bit confused about how this is an upcycle project. It may be worth it to add a little bit more about the upcycling plan in your posts. I’m very excited to see the guitar that you build.

Thanks for the comment Sierra! I think it qualifies as an upcycling project do to the cigar box being reused for something different.
