Main Project Inspirations: Levitation table

For my main project, I got my inspiration from one place, a bar. Last summer I went to Hell’s Canyon on the Idaho/Oregon border for a weekend fishing and camping trip. On the way back, we stopped at a small town for a night and hit up the local bars. One bar had one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. There was an aluminum beer bottle that was floating in space, no strings, nothing physically suspending it at all. This device can be seen below.

This device works by spinning powerful magnets in either the base or top very fast. This creates a stable magnetic field that can support a small amount of weight that is affixed to another magnet and give the appearance that it is defying gravity. For my project, I will just be making a base and use more powerful magnets in hopes that it can support a higher weight. The device will still be fairly small so there will be restrictions on what I can suspend, but I do believe the idea is sound. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this project, please let me know!

I really like your idea! It have a certain mystery around it, which I feel is a really good approach. What kind of aesthetic do you plan to approach this idea from ? I can imagine a ton of ideas for this effect, anywhere from a sci-fi to a steampunk approach. Kudos!

This idea is amazing! I like how you just stumbled upon it in a bar. I have seen these things all over the place, not holding a bottle but miniature earths and other things. Im curious how you plan on spinning the magnets really fast? You are going to want to make sure that they are in balance with each other as to not topple your design over when spinning.
